Gunsmoke: The Seventh Season, Vol. 2

Great shows- priceless.
Clearly most western series and most movies pale to beat this iconic show. No matter how you buy this show- having it is awesome and i hope to see all the seasons come out on dvd. Thank you CBS/PARAMOUNT!!

Gunsmoke
My wife and I love to watch Gunsmoke but we don't
understand why after 20yrs run of Gunsmoke that
there are just now 7 seasons released. At this rate
I won't be able to own and watch all of Gunsmoke. I
will be deceased long before they all get released.
Why, tell me why can't we get more Gunsmoke?

Gunsmoke
Love these DVD's, I give them to my husband. I have been collecting them for him because he is such a fan. I have got all the seasons from 1 to 7 for him. He watches them over and over, I forgot some of the great actors that are on these shows.

Bela Lugosi: Scared to Death Collection (10-pk)

nice collection
I was trying to add a few new Lugosi titles that I didn't have with this 20 movies set. The price was very reasonable at around a dollar each. About half I already had in other sets. It still is worth it. The movie quality and sound is fair, but so are other movies I have got from other collections. They are old movies and it's nice to be able to see them at all. Overall this is worth the money to find all these Lugosi movies together in a nice boxed set.
I like the way the dvd's are stored in each of the two volume boxes (half in each). It's safe and won't scratch. Sturdy and well made Easy to get in and out. Just a cardboard holder to set each disc in individually that opens like a fold out book with each dvd facing you when totally opened. Each dvd has two movies on each. Each dvd has the 2 movie titles and one of the movies pictured on it. The box pictured in the ad is the outside covering that I just put into storage.
I wish this was out before when I started my...

It's not a ripoff
Reviewing the 20 Bela Lugosi film set that came out in February 2013 (in case this review gets later mixed with other product listings).

If you're a Bela Lugosi fan like me, you're always looking for a cheap way to pick up some more of his films that you haven't seen. I'll keep this review short -- the listed movies are there, intact, and playable. If you know anything about Bela Lugosi, you know these are his B and C movie roles, but some of them are memorable. The packaging on this is something like I've never seen -- each disk rests in a slab of what seems like super thick fiberboard, almost like masonite or MDF. It wastes a good bit of shelfspace, but it is sturdy and easy to keep organized.

The transfer quality is of the lowest quality, but not so bad as to be a ripoff or something that shouldn't be sold. These movies average about $1 each with the Amazon prices -- you can't ask for much better.

So if you just wanted to get to see some more...

Bela is back in an outstanding collection!
As a long-time Lugosi fan I was very impressed by this collection, especially the packaging. The inside is particularly nice with a great photo of a Primetime Bela and a well-written biography. Looks great on the bookshelf! The condition of the films are a hit-and-miss affair but it was really well put together. Kudos on this collection!

The Coalition [Blu-ray]

Congratulations to Terrell Suggs and the rest of Team Sizzle
Being from Baltimore and an avid Ravens and T Sizzle fan, I had to buy this in support of our beloved, and oh so colorful "Ball So Hard" grad. This movie was filmed in Arizona, where Terrell grew up from 8th grade on, which says a lot about who he is right there. It's a great story, about a lifestyle that most of us are not familiar with, the pleasure side of some professional athletes' lives, the more playboy type athlete, and the women they have scorned. Needless to say, it is interesting to see how the women join forces, the coalition, for their revenge. It is an entertaining movie, and was such a pleasure too see another side of Terrell Sugg's passion of film making. We all know what he can do on a football field, it was great to share his other love. Working on a low budget, the actors were not A list, but did a great job, especially for those who had never performed before. It was not a great movie, but a great first movie for all involved making it. Congratulations...

Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl Star Terrell Suggs Scores with New Movie, "The Coalition"
THE COALITION is co-written and co-produced by pro football star Terrell Suggs of the Super Bowl XVLII champion Baltimore Ravens. I know what you're thinking, straight-to-DVD romantic comedy co-written/produced by a guy who makes a living putting quarterbacks in the hospital? No thanks. Well, you're in for a pleasant surprise

THE COALITION, which is co-written/directed by Monica Mingo, is the story of a group of scorned women who form an unlikely alliance to get revenge on a superstar baller named Prime (played by ex-Seattle Seahawk, Eddie Goines) and his womanizing homeboys, after Prime replaces the film's ostensible protagonist, a successful, but desperate sister named Autumn (played by newcomer Ingrid Clay), with a sexy, but na

The Ballad of Narayama (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

What is the Meaning of Life ... or Death?
Quite a few Asian films - Korean, Japanese, Chinese - explore the meaning of old age and specifically the cycle of life. This is one of the great themes of this film. The essential fact of this movie is that, through custom (and religion), the parents who reach age 70 are to leave the society and meet their end on the top of the Mountain Narayama. In a sense, it is both frightening and sacred. The cycle of life continues with the younger generation.

Everyone who sees this provocative movie will talk about its striking visual beauty. But more importantly, it strikes a nerve - how should society allocate its scarce resources. Ironically, the fact that the old are left to die by exposure is not necessarily a statement that the elders are not valued by the society. The old are valued...but they need to recognize their function in letting the young take their place. The act of death, therefore, becomes a sacred rite. This is very vividly presented in the last frames...

A Brutal and Beautiful Tale of Old Age
This is the more beautiful of two adaptations of the same story. Director Keisuke Kinoshita used traditional Japanese Kabuki theater as visual inspiration for a stunning story of generational tension in a small village (the other adaptation of this story is the far more realistic and brutal The Ballad of Narayama ).

The plot involves three generations of a household: the aged Orin who is the matriarch of the household, her son Tatsuhei, and his son--a completely self-absorbed teenager--Kesakichi. The village tradition dictates that elderly parents are carried into the mountains and left there to die, so that the younger generations have a better chance to survive.

However this family problematizes tradition because Orin is in great health, as evidenced by her full set of teeth. Orin is eager to carry out the tradition, counting down the days until her trip to Narayama. But her son, Tatsuhei,...

(4.5 stars) "The Ballad of Narayama" is a beautiful, well-acted and also a heartbreaking film from filmmaker Keisuke Kinoshita
A long time ago in Japan, there was a custom practiced in poor and mountainous regions during a time of drought or famine. That practice is known as "Ubasute", in which a relative carries an elderly family member to the mountain or a remote, desolate area to be left there to die.

Because of the tough times and families were struggling to feed everyone, it was a custom that was mandated by feudal officials.

And the custom has been featured in Japanese folklore passed down from generation after generation. Songs about a relative carrying an elderly on their back, while the elderly would snap twigs, so the relative will no how to get back home.

The practice of Ubasute would be explored in the 1958 film "The Ballad of Narayama" (Narayama bushiko), written and directed by Keisuke Kinoshita ("Twenty-Four Eyes", "Morning for the Osone Family", "The River Fuefuki", to name a few).

The film was remade in 1983 by director Shohei Imamura, who showed...

A Matter Of Wife And Death

Good Drama
I have followed Rod Taylor since I was 16 - 50 years ago. I like his presentation on the screen and enjoyed this DVD. This production was part of an era that produced lots of action movies - good guy against bad guy and this has a very good script. It is not his best nor are most of his roles. He does best in romantic comedies. Still, I will enjoy this DVD and will for many years to come. Thanks to all who made it available to me.

GREAT MOVIE!!!
This is another Rod Taylor movie that I have a feeling very few people have seen. It was made a a TV show pilot but sadly didn't make it on the air. I seriously don't know why it didn't. It's fun to watch & ladies there are lots of scenes with Rod changing his shirt!!! :o) If you get the chance to buy this, do!!! You will not regret it. As for the seller: wonderful service.

Ambush At Tomahawk Gap

Gutsy Gusto Oater.
Ambush At Tomahawk Gap tells the story of four outlaws-McCord John Hodiak, Egan David Bryan, Doc Ray Teal & Kid John Derek who after being released from a five year sentence for robbery at Yuma Territorial Prison, implode from within as they yearn to find the hidden loot from their ill gotten gains. Not only that but they are in the middle of Indian territory and Apache attacks are frequent and savage in their execution.

Bloody & brutal Western programmer out of Columbia Pictures that's produced by Wallace MacDonald and directed by Fred Sears. Written by David Lang, the principal location shoot is at Corriganville, Simi Valley, California. With Technicolor enhanced cinematography coming from Henry Freulich. Tho featuring a pretty weak, and at times nutty, story, the film has a high watch-ability factor on account of its adherence to Western action staples, it helps, too, that Sears directs with an absolutely no-nonsense approach. Running at just shy of 80 minutes,...

Tough Little Gem
This film has developed something of a reputation as a strong low budget western, and I just wanted to say that Ambush at Tomahawk Gap deserves its rep.
This is a short, fast, and surprisingly hardboiled, little movie. Almost every character is hard, greedy and desperate, and the story puts them into a tight spot that just gets worse, building to a violent climax that seems likely to have influenced more than one spaghetti western of fifteen years later.
I like westerns, but prefer the leaner, meaner style, which is actually pretty uncommon. This film delivers the goods, and if you like `em tough and don't turn your nose up at films clearly made on a less than blockbuster budget, it'll probably work for you too.

ambush at tomahawk gap
I liked the movie and thought the actors did a fine job. I would recommend it to western fans for good entertainment.

In Our Nature

A Weekend Of Conversation And Catharsis: Four Likable Actors Shine In This Quiet Character Piece
If you watch indie films with any frequency, there really isn't much that is revelatory about the set-up of "In Our Nature." This is one of those small films that sets a handful of characters down in an isolated setting so that they may discuss relationships and mend perceived injustices. The central pair in writer/director Brian Savelson's piece are an alienated father and son. Each is accompanied by a significant other, and the quartet meet accidentally at the family's lakeside cabin. These intimate films can sometimes feel like a staged play, as is the case here, and may not be for every taste. But I found "In Our Nature" quite charming and surprisingly restrained. In the hands of a capable and likable cast, small verbal exchanges can highlight a lifetime of dysfunction and misunderstanding. Not all is doom and gloom, though, as much humor is peppered throughout. Not much happens from an actual plotting standpoint, but the characters make strides (both big and little) to...

Destined to become a cult classic
This is just a fantastic movie. It's intelligent, thoughtful, well-written, and beautifully filmed. John Slattery, Gabrielle Union, and Jenna Malone all give exceptional performances. If you're looking for a movie full of violence and car chases, this isn't for you - but if you're looking for an insightful meditation on family, home, and growing up, you can't do better than In Our Nature. It's destined to become a cult classic, I'm sure of it.

The Bouquet

Family Friendly Movie
As I sit here with tears streaming down my face with the credits rolling in the background, my heart hurts. The Bouquet is ultimately about change, moving on, family, love, and teamwork. It is also about telling those you love most in life how you feel about them because one day they won't be there.

We start out with an adorable older couple Cecil and Bonnie will truly love each other. They love with the kind of love and acceptance we all wish we had. They are the parents of Terri and Mandy. Terri is living the business life in NY and Mandy has followed her parents love of grassroots life.

When tragedy strikes, Terri heads home to be with family. Upon finding out that the family business is suffering she puts herself in charge of updating the business.

As with most families there is jealousy, and hurt, to get over before making way for forgiveness.

If you enjoy family dramas that focus on the ties that bind us to each other and allow us to...

This Christian movie does not rely on Hollywood's Fx but instead showcases some real talents!
If like me you like a clean, well done family movie with a heartfelt message, this one is for you! I spotted this title a while back and I was very happy to have a librarian recommended only this past week!
Kristy Swanson of 'What If' stars in this movie along with Michael Shanks, Nicola Canvendish and UNICEF Ambassador Danny Glover amongst others.

In 'The Bouquet' Nasser Group North delivers once again a moving story which merits a big accolade for its stunning set, family portrait and of course its warm message.
Like many siblings, business savy Terri and ecology lover sister Mandy have grown apart, each invested in their own interest, one living some 2000 miles away and the other, a mere 20 miles away.

Despite their rural America warm and caring childhood, neither makes much of an effort to be close to their parents or the family florist business, now struggling.
When tragedy occurs, they must reach an agreement and either help each other or see...

A Great DVD
Part of the synopsis for this movie stated: "Filled with romance, humor , and hope, it's an endearing story about making time for the ones you love."

I would agree there was some romance and humor, but there was definitely hope. Hope in the fact that two daughters who were estranged would not allow the dream of their mother's florist business die with the death of their father. In spite of set backs of all kinds, the teamwork that evolved and closeness of family ties survived and thrived, and yes, the hope again brought success to their efforts to keep the dream alive.

This sweet movie will hopefully make you think about the time you set aside for the ones you love. Are you too busy and have too many commitments to take the time to sit down and actually be with a sister, mother, father, brother, significant other, or child? It made me evaluate the time I spend with those I love both family and friends. It is a movie worth watching and discussing. I know you will...

As I Stand

Excellent movie!
This was an excellent movie depicting the agony of loss, but the healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ and the comfort He gives - how He never leaves us. We get a glimpse of how everything works together for those that love Him. I would highly recommend it to anyone that has suffered a difficulty or lost a loved one!

shows how our responses alter our life
This was a good movie that shows how our choices may change our life, but, more life altering is our responses to what happens!
It was worth the money and something I can share with others!

Very Inspiring
This was a very sincere story about faith and the Christian walk. It was neither too preachy or artifical nor did it back away from declaring the makers of the movie views on God. I found the acting to be superb and the music aided in the storytelling.

Was there anything bad about this movie? It ended. I wasn't ready to let go of the characters which is the sign of a brilliantly written story...

You May Not Kiss the Bride

WHEN YOU'RE HUNGRY, EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD
Brian Lighthouse (Dave Annable) photographs pets in clothes for a living. His new assistant Tonya (Mena Suvari) is sexy, playful and is in love with Brian who for some reason avoids her advances. Through some poorly scripted circumstances Brian finds himself in a position where he must marry Masha (Katharine McPhee) the daughter of a crime boss (Ken Davitian) in order for her to obtain her green card. After a year, the marriage will be annulled and she will then marry the overly jealous Vinnie Jones. Dad and Vinnie forbid consummating the relationship, even as they honeymoon in Tahiti.

Brian's under utilized mom (Kathy Bates) offers little in the way of helpful advice as she is a stay at home mom. The poorly conceived plot drags along and then at about 45 minutes into the film, we get the twist and the movie becomes a watchable comedy, formula and all. This will work as a date night film and perhaps a teen family night. Mena "Kitten" Suvari steals all the scenes. Her part...

Wild Alaska

The short summer
This 45 minute DVD deals with Alaska's wildlife only in the summer. It has scene selection and English subtitles for the deaf.
Much of the emphasis is on the bears of Alaska; hardly anything is mentioned about salmon, except as food for the bears. We see how polar bears swim in the summer and do not eat, since they hunt on the ice and it is gone. The film even ends with bears benefiting from what is left over from the Bowhead whale hunt.

There is one scene showing a wolf hunting and catching a squirrel and a mink catching and eating the claw of a Dungeness crab. Some mention is made of the incredible growth of flowers and caribou are included along with the pestering insects. The seabirds and eagles are also given some descriptions of what they do in the summer months.
This is not a film for the very young or squeamish unless you want them to see bears mating and a Native America hunt of the bowhead whale where the cutting of blubber and gushing of blood is...

Celeste and Jesse Forever

another great indie 'romcom'
"Celeste and Jesse Forever" (2012 release; 92 min.) brings the story of Celeste (played by Rashida Jones, who also co-wrote the script) and Jesse (played by Andy Semberg), who have been "best friends forever" since their youth, got married 6 years ago, and now are separating but still remain friends. One day Jesse runs into Veronica, a Belgian girl (played by Rebecca Dayan), and starts dating her, even though he remains tormented by the loss of Celeste. In the rest of the movie we watch and wonder whether Celeste and Jesse ultimately will reconcile.

First off, you need to take a leap of faith that, despite still being BFFs, Celeste and Jesse are in the process of divorcing. It's never explained why that is happening, other than a general "taking each other for granted" type explanation (which does not square with the two spending all their time together). But once you can get over that, the movie works like a charm. Jones just oozes charisma, and with her recent roles in...

"HEARTWARMING, FUNNY, DRAMATIC!"
This is a comedy and drama, very much like 1989's 'When Harry Met Sally.' Most important, it portrays the ups-and-downs of relationships in today's world, on TV shows and in the Real World. The question millions of people have asked themselves after a loving relationship ends, can we still be friends? Celeste and Jesse met in high school, married young, and after reaching age thirty, began to grow apart. Celeste became successful in her career and Jesse is content at being unemployed. They clash in opinions and arguments until Celeste asks for a divorce. Jesse accepts the transition, still in love with Celeste. As they are apart, Celeste had second thoughts, and they both realized that in order to truly love someone, you may have to let them go. There are mixed-emotions, humor, and heartfelt moments. Acting Performance Very Good. Enjoyable and Highly Recommended!

Solid movie.
I did not expect this movie to be as good as it was when I decided to purchase it. This is one of those movies that, when you reflect back on the situations the main characters find themselves in, you really appreciate the movie and may end up watching it a second or third time through. The acting was solid, especially when it needed to be (like when she finds out the big news), and most of the time when I asked myself: "How would I react to that?", their reactions were largely similar to what mine would have been.

My favorite part is the "climax" when the two main characters finally confront their emotions outside of the bar and they do it angrily and storm off. You can really feel Rashida Jones' heart breaking in that sequence of scenes as she is at her wit's end and has nothing left to lose so she goes for broke and comes up short.

This ending was the type of ending I LOVE because you will like it, or dislike it, based on who you are as a...

The Munsters: Season Two

Still The Munsters after all these years...
As a child growing up in the 70's and 80's, I used to come home from school and watch The Munsters. I was absolutely fascinated with this series. The characters were hilarious, and the scripts were excellent! Now, the complete second season, comes to DVD in a 3 disc set. It features all 32 episodes from The Munsters second and final season. Don't forget about the 4 A&E Bios as bonus features! The 4 A&E Bios will be about, The Munsters, "America's First Family of Fright", Fred Gwynne, "More Than a Munster", Yvonne DeCarlo, "Gilded Lily", and Al Lewis, "Forever Grandpa". All packaged, in a Herman Munster head.

Take a good close look at Fred Gwynne's portrayal of Herman Munster. You will see that Herman get's more and more child-like, especially in "Prehistoric Munster", and "The Musician". Herman has now developed a very large booming laugh, the occasional temper-tantrums, and his always popular catchphrases, "Darn, Darn, Darn!!!" and "I'll kill 'em, I'll kill 'em, I'll kill...

At Long Last: Herman Munster vs. Clyde!
I bought the first season DVD set, but this is the one I've really been waiting for. It has my two favorite episodes: the one with "Fair Deal Dan" starring Frank Gorshin as a crooked used car dealer, and the other featuring the battle between Herman and a new employee at the parlor--Clyde, the practical joker.

When TV Land aired the Munsters, they refused to show this episode. I always wondered why; now I read on here that they considered it "too violent".

How absurd. When TV Land started, it sounded like a great idea--a cable network dedicated to presenting old, classic TV series, maybe the way TCM presents old movies. This turned out to be a false promise. TV Land, typically, turned out to be a pure rubbish, run, now we learn, by a bunch of PC fascists who not only cut up episodes in order to fit in more commercials, but also censor which episodes we get to see depending on which offend their "enlightened" new age fascist sensibilities. Now the network is...

FINALLY THE VIEWERS GET THE OPTION TO SEE EPISODE #53 "HERMAN'S PEACE OFFENSIVE" WHICH IS BANNED ON "TV LAND" & "NICK AT NIGHT"
Episode #53 "Herman's Peace Offensive" as a child in the 1960's was always my favorite, and needless to say it aired over and over. The problem is the public relations people at "TV Land" & "Nick at Night" told me that "we will never air it" In my opinion the scene (which I think is the one that "TV Land" & "Nick At Night" has a problem with happens at Herman's work locker) is really not all that bad. I'm not going to spoil it and tell what happens due to the fact that Munster fans old and new may never have seen this episode and with only 70 total episodes ever made it's a great treat to find out that an episode that they may never have seen will be included in this DVD set. This episode is one of the best that is filled with pranks galore, but more importantly a great lesson is learned which Herman teaches to Eddie. The viewers who have not yet seen this episode can decide if this episode should be banned. Beside this episode, some of the best were made so the entire second season...

The Venus Files
I had the Kamyla series, this is a nice side story to that series, but the story with some background insight that should have been made into the first epsoide of the series.

Wasn't able to watch more than the first scene.
The sexual violence against women was too much for me to deal with. This is sexually explicit as well. I didn't realize it was Henti or close to it.

Huh?
I thought I recalled viewing bits and pieces of these characters online but this storyline has only remnants of that and it was disappointing on top of it. There was very little time to develop any attachment to any of the lead characters and the tragic back story came out of nowhere. On top of that, it was misogynistic in nature which is not a favorite premise of mine.

Cabaret [Blu-ray]

Dark wild nights in the late Weimar period
This is a very good movie, although deeply disturbing. Set in the great city of Berlin in 1931, a time of economic depression and political crisis, this movie constructs an image of the decadence and delusion of the late Weimar period as German society is plunging through a kind of moral and social decay into the nightmare of Nazism.

The film is based on "The Berlin Stories" by Christopher Isherwood (written between 1935 and 1939), who lived in the city in the early 1930s. He had seen both the decadence and the dangerous hunger for a kind of national "purification" among many "respectable" and "moral" middle class Germans, who already had been traumatized by military defeat, hyperinflation, and mass unemployment. The film, following Isherwood, weaves together the stories of the marginal characters who live in this troubled city at the very edge of the great moral catastrophe of the 20th century.

Liza Minnelli is brilliant as "Sally Bowles", an Americanized version of the British...

Life is a cabaret, old chum...
It's often been said about old musical movies that they went too far in the conceit of people "bursting out in song" during a scene. Well, in his film version of Kander & Ebb's masterful Cabaret, Bob Fosse completely got around that problem by presenting the songs on stage. It was handled brilliantly, the choreography was incredible, and the movie just plain works.

Cabaret the movie doesn't share many songs in common with the original stage version - it still has "Willkommen," "Two Ladies," "Tomorrow Belongs To Me," a German version of "Married," "If You Could See Her," and "Cabaret" - but that's it. A few new songs were added - "Mein Herr," "Maybe This Time," "Money, Money," - but for the most part it's a lot less sung than the staged version. A lot of musical numbers dealing with the world outside the Kit Kat Klub were used as underscoring, preserving John Kander's great tunes. But this doesn't detract from it being one of the best filmed musicals out there.

Fosse's...

Beware False DVD Packaging
While this is probably not a bone of contention with most viewers, I think it's worth noting for those that do pay attention to these things, especially if you base your purchases on them, as I did in this case. The packaging on this newer DVD edition of "Cabaret" states that it is an anamorphic transfer (i.e. "Enhanced for Widescreen TVs"). It is NOT. This is the SAME disc as before, with new a label on it.

They merely changed the packaging, I guess, so that they could mention "Chicago" in the description on the back cover and tie it into the heat for that film. Shame on you, Warner Bros. We all work hard for our money and deserve better than to believe we're buying a new anamorphic transfer, when you are really marketing the exact same discs as before.

Monster High Double Feature - Friday Night Frights / Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love?

Good value for 2 movies
I was pleaseantly surprised by the fact that this DVD includes two features....Friday Night Frights, and Why Do Ghouls Fall In Love??. Mattel could have easily released them seperately and charged more but they chose to put them together which I think is pretty cool. Both movies come on one disc which I think makes it easier for viewing since you don't have to change it out to watch one feature or the other. I will give a small synopsis of each movie (I don't want to give too much away).

In Friday Night Frights we see the "ghouls" learning the power of being true to (and believing in) yourself when they take on the task of playing on the Monster High "scream" team in the Skulltimate Roller Maze after the guys on the team get hurt. At first the girls face opposition (tradition states only boys can play) but they never give up and eventually win the respect and support of their schoolmates and even their rivals. I like the message of this dvd .... it is totally girl power. It...

Voltageous!
This was the best DVD set ever for Monster High fans. Both movies were well written, and had great interesting storylines and beautiful animation. I am an adult fan, however my 9 year old god daughter is also into Monster High. These movies are clean and appropriate for young children of any age, but at the same time have enough jokes and things that will go over kid's heads to keep the adults interested.

While "Why Do Ghouls Fall In Love" is a romance, it is clean enough for the children, yet having your heart broken is a storyline all the adults watching can relate to.

Friday Night Frights does have a few scenes where Clawd is somewhat possessive of Draculaura and telling her what to do. It is a good opportunity to open up a dialogue with older children about healthy relationships. At the end he comes around, so younger children probably do not need this kind of talk and will just see it as a kid's movie as it is meant to be.

Highly recommended...

Monster High crazy!
My wife and daughter have emmersed themselves in the Monster High concept and seem to be enjoying all the different facets of it. I have to admit the dolls seem interesting and a nice break away from the boring Barbie concept. I didn't watch the movies, but they did and found them, in my daughter's estimation, "awesome!" They look forward to more MH movies. As for the buying experience, the DVD arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition.

The Pool

Superb depiction of Indian life
This interesting and impressive and ultimately moving film is set in the Indian state of Goa and uses the talents of street kids who play its stars. It follows the lives of Venkatesh, an 18-year-old and his 11-year-old friend Janghir (the actors use their actual names. Both live a hand-to-mouth existence cleaning hotel rooms and restaurants and scrounging what they can selling plastic bags.

Venkatesh becomes fascinated by a villa on a hill with a pristine swimming pool he longs to swim in. He eventually inserts himself into the lives of the father and teenage daughter living there - neither of whom ever breaks the perfect blue water of the pool. The father, played with grave dignity by Indian film star Nana Patekar, takes an interest in the illiterate Venkatesh, who is smart but has no schooling. Venkatesh, for his part, is sexually drawn to the sultry and bored Ayesha -- who is interested in Venkatesh and Janghir -- but clearly the class divisions between them are too wide...

Beautiful movie about India
Beautiful movie! The story, the images and the dialogues are poetical. I enjoyed the slow space of the movie and the beauty of the pictures.

The Pool
I liked The Pool when I first saw it on the Sundance channel while channel surfing. It was an escape film for me, took me to India and what felt like was the 'real' India and it's culture. The story was compelling and well acted in my opinion.

Color me shocked. When I saw the first screenshots of "Listen to Me Girls, I Am Your Father!", my mind instantly painted the ugliest picture of it. For a jaded anime viewer, some shots of three underage girls being taken care of by a college-age man looks like yet another sketchy sex comedy. Out of curiosity at how abhorrent and trashy it would be, I watched the first episode. And then the funniest thing happened.

It caught me off guard, kicked me in the gut, and dragged me through all of its 13 episodes with force. And I loved every second of it. "Listen to Me, Girls!" is one of the best anime comedy-dramas in recent memories, and any fan worth their salt owes it to themselves to watch it.

Yuuta is a single college student, barely scraping by in his studio apartment. His luck with the ladies is suspect, and he only has one or two good friends to speak of. His life is about to get a lot harder, though; his sister wants him to look after her three rambunctious...

One of the BEST Anime I have ever watched.
Great series. I wish there was more. I watched it for cheap on a video subscription channel. I am buying the DVD because I liked it so much.

A surprising heart filled story
THis was one that caught my eye, and i wikiied it - and the premise intrueged me. and I watched it, and found it to be an enjoyable and heartfilled story. The main character is a young college student who was raised by his older sister after their parents die. Now she is married to a slightly older man, with two daughters from previous marriages (Sora and Miu) and a loveable three year old daughter (Hina). But when he watches them while they go on their honeymoon, the plane crashes, leaving them alone until he decides to take them in. Now a small room, three girls (two on which are at THAT age), and a beautiful love interest, can Yutta bring about the happy family, or will he have to let this dream go.

As I said, this was a well written, heartfilled story. Each character has personalitly, especially Hina, the little weapon of mass destruction of cuteness (everywhere she goes, people love her and give her little treats). Whille the story is done, it does have a small...

ESPN Films: Ghosts of Ole Miss

Great story and great storytelling
Despite being a big SEC Football fan, I'd never heard about this story. It's fascinating history on many levels. Even if you don't care about football it's a microcosm of America in those years.

Ole Miss History
Well told story of the integration of Ole Miss in 1962. Found my deceased father in the stands of the Ole Miss football game. So glad he visited me! We've come a long way since those terrible times. Ole Miss football probably can be credited for saving this wonderful University. Can't wait to go to The Grove for football this year. Hotty Toddy!!!

moving and balanced
I saw this on ESPN and liked it so much that I wanted to own a copy in order to show my History classes.

My Worst Nightmare

Don't let the first 15 minutes turn you off.. It's a delightfully quirky French comedy.
For the first 15 minutes of so of watching this new French film, starring the incomparable actress Isabelle Huppert I was wondering what I was getting into. The frenetic pacing and the obnoxious character played by actor Benoit Poelvoorde was making me nuts and I was ready to quit. But then things changed and, all of a sudden, I was drawn in and really cared for the characters. And, if you like offbeat French comedies - or independent films (both are the type coming from Strand Releasing) I think you'll like this one two. Huppert is not known for comedy but she has fun here. The story is basically how two individuals who have virtually nothing in common (he's a loud mouth slob; she an art dealer who is "cold as ice") find something in common. I won't reveal more of the plot - and I hope other reviewers refrain from this too - as it will spoil the fun.

The 100 minute 2011 film is the kind that the French do best. It's in French of course and the subtitles - while in white -...

A French Farce That Relies Too Heavily On Opposites-Attract Stereotypes
The great Isabelle Huppert must surely be one of the boldest, most fearless actors at work today. But I must confess, her films are becoming increasingly hit-or-miss in my mind. Even in her most uninspired pieces, though, I usually find Huppert absolutely fascinating. I think that this was, perhaps, my greatest disappointment with the farce "My Worst Nightmare." It is not a bad movie, per se, it just lacks any amount of originality. And instead of offering anything new, Huppert serves up a character that she could play in her sleep! This is a quintessential opposites-attract type comedy that pairs an uptight businesswoman (Huppert) with a irrepressible and irresponsible lothario (Benoit Poelvoorde). Can his impulsiveness thaw her icy demeanor? And can her seriousness make him a better man? I bet you might already know the answer to these questions! More to the point is whether you will care or not.

As "My Worst Nightmare" opens, Huppert is paired with Andre...

Loved the story1
Many funny surprises and twists to this movie. It a great movie to watch with someone you love. Open up the bottle of wine, relax and enjoy!

In My Pocket

Genuine Genius
It's been awhile since I saw the movie opening, so I can't comment on the specifics of greatness, but I remember this film was beautifully composed and entertaining from the first second to the last. The music was handpicked with care. It's real people going through the realness of life.

Addiction does not discriminate
Here is a good looking bright kid that comes from a very successful family that tried to beat addiction but the temptation was too great to resist. Movie was interesting and will be educational for some.

UNBELIEVEABLE !!!!!!!!!!!
Deserves an Oscar !!!!! THIS MOVIE WAS SO GREAT AND THE EFFECTS WERE VERYGOOD.
Congrats to these smaller film makers who put out great stuff.

Mafia

LET'S GO GET SOME CHEESECAKE
This film had the makings of a 5 star grindhouse. Ving Rhames is Renzo Wes the bad guy. He is tailed by Pam Grier who shoots a gun now instead of using mock karate moves. Robert Patrick is her partner. Renzo runs a strip club with the great looking Heather Rae Young dancing on tables. The soundtrack is 70's R&B rifts. And the film had a twist to it. Killing galore. What was not to like?

The execution was seriously bad. The plot went everywhere and nowhere. The lines were terrible and the actors were simply reading them, going through the motions. Ryan Combs couldn't direct a compass to point north. Heather Rae Young is great to look at, but couldn't deliver a line if her life depended on it. Pam Grier now has to rely on her acting ability instead of her looks to get by, and this script didn't help any. The twist was odd and didn't make much sense. Blue eyed Melanie Marden plays the sister of Ving Rhames which had me scratching my head. What was with the poorly developed...

Original Story Line
Adventurous but no new twists. Typical gangster movie. Good for entertainment but if you want new and exciting look somewhere else.

Fast
Got here really fast and in great condition. Great movie too. "The old school" for sure. I can remember those days. Movie is great.

Pumpkinhead IV: Blood Feud/Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes (Double Feature, 2 discs)

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington- CLASSIC
Political films don't get much more powerful or emotional than this. This film is a classic in every sense of the word.

James Stewart is tremendous as a naive Senator faced with corruption in the highest sense. His fight is not just that of one man against a political machine, but a fight of honesty, integrity, and decency verses distortion of the truth, malice, and greed. Director Frank Capra made a very smart choice in Stewart for his leading man. James Stewart can do a number of things well- here he exudes innocence, and then transform that innocence into a mighty dedication to his ideals.

Jean Arthur is fantastic in her role. How she so convincingly pulls off her cold indifference and disillusionment toward politics, I will never know. Her transformation is even more dramatic than Stewart's- as we see hope restored in what she once held so dear.

The filibuster scene is the film's definitive and most famous scene. Here, you have democracy's most...

pumkin head 3&4
great horror film got one all 1 need is 2 I love the whole movie great action and horror movie is nice and clear

An education in American politics
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is already known as a classic film about American politics. What people sometimes forget is how well it's aged. Sure, it's a black & white film from 1939, but it feels surprisingly modern. The film is pretty sophisticated about how politics is really conducted, but also has a feel-good outcome. I recently re-watched this movie to help explain to my little sister how a filibuster works. It helps to know a bit about politics before watching the movie, or at least know what a filibuster and quorum are. It also raises some interesting political ethics questions (is it right to filibuster a whole bill just to oppose one bad provision), but that's probably beyond the scope of Hollywood.

The Philo Vance Murder Case Collection

"A Variety Of PHILO VANCE's Escape The Warner Archive......"
Hot on the heels of their Perry Mason Mysteries: The Original Warner Bros. Movies collection comes the PHILO VANCE MURDER CASE MYSTERIES COLLECTION. During the '20s and '30s, the undisputed leading light of popular American detective fiction was S.S. Van Dine's Philo Vance. The brilliant and often overweening Manhattan sophisticate appeared in a dozen best-selling adventures that became coveted properties for the Hollywood studios, as Paramount, Warner and M.G.M.. jockeyed for the rights. The six black & white films (on three discs) spanning the decade from 1930 to 1940 feature a variety of Vance portrayals, and a variety of styles along with a variety of film conditions. In my summaries I try not to give away the plots, but there are some minor spoilers, so use your own judgement. Let's investigate......

The first selection, THE BISHOP MURDER CASE (1930) from M.G.M. stars a dapper pencil mustached...

Some Philo Dough
Mr. John H. McCarthy's excellent review of this collection offers all the necessary details, so I'll keep mine as short as possible, since I largely agree with Mr. McCarthy's assessment of the films.

THE BISHOP MURDER CASE (1930) ***
I give this three stars mainly for its historic interest as a bridge between the silent and sound eras. I'll disagree slightly with Mr. McCarthy's assessment of the acting in this being "amateur theater" and say that it rather shows the actors struggling to get away from silent movie-style acting and into a more natural, fluid style. Roland Young is the best actor in the lot -- even better than Basil Rathbone here -- and everyone aside from Young and Rathbone remain constrained by silent movie histrionics. For that latter reason alone, this entry is worth seeing, even if the story itself is rather dull. Still, it's fun to see the actors struggle to speak into the microphones (reminiscent of the scene from "Singing in the Rain")...

No Problems
Wonderful DVD, have bought many of the Warner Archive discs and they work perfectly for me. I have one DVD player that won't play them, but its a very old, low end model attached to a secondary TV. I think these kind of cheapy or early units can't handle the DVD writable discs that Warner Archive uses for their on-demand products.

Laura [Blu-ray]

Thank you, Mom and Dad
About 30 years ago, my parents , who sadly are both gone now, recommended Otto Preminger's "Laura" to me. At that time, I had only seen the notoriously bad made-for-TV version starring Lee Radziwill(!) and George Sanders. When I saw the 1944 version, I was hooked. "Laura" is one of those perfect films that draws you in every time. Now when I mean "perfect", that doesn't necessarily mean believable. "Laura" is an elegant, film noir fairy tale. I'm not really sure that Laura would end up with a rough-edged detective, but who cares? That's the magic of movies! The fact that you believe it while you're watching it is what counts. If you DON'T believe it WHILE you're watching it, that's when the trouble starts! But back to "Laura". The film is elegantly photographed, with sets that I wish I could live in. Then take a top-notch cast that features a drop-dead beautiful Gene Tierney, the acidic Clifton Webb (in an incredible screen debut), the...

Classic film noir comes to DVD in deluxe edition
A film noir classic comes to DVD for the first time packed full of more extras than expected, "Laura" tells the story of a society beauty (Gene Tierney in a career defining performance) murdered for no apparent reason. Detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews in a hardboiled strong performance) investigates her murder questioning the men in her life beginning with a witty critic Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb in a deliciously droll performance and in a major come back) and playboy Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price). Seen in flashback, we discover Laura's background and how she rises from the middle class to world class society beauty with the assistance of those men in her life. Things take a surprising twist when McPherson meets the very woman who was murdered as the audience must figure out what's really going on. A marvelous suspense thriller with elements of film noir, "Laura" continues to be haunting sixty years on.

A nicely detailed transfer with rich blacks and a nicely...

Five stars for the music alone!
The theme from "Laura" is one of the most haunting ever written, by David Raksin, relatively unknown, but forever memorialized through this melody. Gene Tierney is at her peak of beauty, and she really is breathtaking in the most literal sense of the word. When I grew up this was always one of my favorite movies, and then when I re-discovered this movie as an adult, I was always mesmerized by her and by the entire cast, the score and the story, all prime examples of how great film noir can be when it's done with this amount of style and class.

A Star Is Born [Blu-ray]

"The world could end each night, with one more look at you"
A blockbuster at the time of it's original release (it was the second-highest grossing film of 1976), the third screen version of A STAR IS BORN has always divided critics and fans alike. The film open to scathingly negative reviews, however, $5.6 million-budgeted picture went on to gross over $150 million at the box office and won an Academy Award and five Golden Globes. It's not without some irony that Streisand's most commercially successful film would also remain her most controversial. For every ten fans who state that STAR is Streisand's best film, there are always ten more who claim it is the weakest film in her filmography. Although both sides have some merit to support their claims, it should still be noted that the seventies take on A STAR IS BORN remains one of the most touching and highly entertaining showbiz dramas that Hollywood ever produced. For my money, it's the best version of the often-told tale.

The film is solidly enjoyable and throughly...

A Star Is Born DVD More Than Satisfies
I highly recommend the disc to Streisand fans who will relish Barbra's full-length film commentary, 16 minute of additional scenes (many previously unseen), and original wardrobe test footage. Of course, the movie itself in all of its remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack glory sounds and looks as vibrant and possibly even better than it played in cinemas. The musical numbers and theatrical lighting are exceptional and features some truly classic Streisand singing on stage. With the inclusion of Barbra's complete humming and acoustic guitar rendition of "Evergreen," we finally have the opportunity to enjoy an otherwise unused musical number. Even her commentary is enlightening, revealing that Kristofferson had a first shot at the song's lyrics but didn't submit them until just a few years ago when he sent Barbra a framed copy. Among the deleted footage is Barbra applying lipstick to KK in the bathtub scene where she admits being comfortable enough with him from earlier years to...

The Ultimate Wallow for Barbra-philes...Watch Closely Now as the New DVD Has Solid Extras
Thirty years after its initial release, the third version of "A Star Is Born" finally comes to DVD in a package that should please the most devoted fans of Barbra Streisand. That would include me since I just saw her in concert singing among other numbers, the feminist anthem "Woman in the Moon" from this 1976 film. Easy to dismiss, the movie's career-polarizing story is such a sturdy pile of Hollywood-style clichés that variations of it exist in other films including Streisand's own "Funny Girl". This time reset to the then-contemporary music scene, the timeworn plot follows self-destructive rock star John Norman Howard on his deep-dive career descent just as he meets club singer Esther Hoffman who is awaiting her big break.

Troubles dog their courtship from the outset, as John Norman (both names please) responds to grasping fans and bloodless DJs with random acts of violence (from which he inexplicably escapes prosecution). To John Norman, Esther represents his...

Paul Williams Still Alive

Paul's Fans are Still Alive Too
I'm strongly recommending this film, although only to those "super-fans" of Paul Williams (and I can proudly count myself as being one of them).

I've been listening to Paul Williams ever since my father brought home his LP "A Little Bit Of Love" way back in 1974. I was only 10 or so, but his songs resonated with me even as a young boy. The album was so vastly different from any of the typical country twang that my father was accustomed to playing that it really stood out, and it remains a favorite of mine even to this day. In the mid 70's, Williams released "Phantom of the Paradise", an incredibly creative glam/horror cult film and soundtrack that truly solidified my love for Paul and his music.

STILL ALIVE recounts the many TV guest appearances and cameos Paul made during the 70's, and as a fan, it was so pleasurable watching these film snippets. It was like traveling inside a television time capsule, and I was struck at the sheer volume of projects Paul was...

A misguided but surprisingly compelling story...
Tossing aside the poorly chosen title, the film has one significant conceit that harms it... the idea that Paul's existence was solely dictated by his TV popularity. He WAS a staple of 70's TV talk shows, but let's face it, A) the talk show format died, Paul didn't, and B) if that is what you love Paul for you're obviously not as interested in Paul as you think you are. Director Stephen Kessler takes us along on a fascinating ride which on the surface comes across like a stalker/star relationship wherein the stalker uses the camera to leverage access, which lends the first half of the film a great deal of uneasy tension between the subject and the director. How many filmmakers WANT to advertise that their presence made their star itch?

The film still manages to pull a rabbit out of it's hat as Paul's life is explored in sometimes deep levels and other times very shallow ones (an effort to gloss over Paul's work for Alcoholics Anonymous is brushed off nearly as easily as...

A missed opportunity....
The premise of director Stephen Kessler's film, Paul Williiams Still Alive, is that Kessler, a fan of legendary singer-songwriter and 70s pop culture icon,Paul Williams, since childhood, wrongly assumed that Williams was dead. Once Kessler discovered, in fact, that Williams was 'still alive,' he decided to look Williams up and make a documentary about him, or so he says. That premise sounds shaky to begin with. If you are a fan of someone's work then wouldn't you feel compelled to keep up with what they have been up to, creatively speaking? WIth such a self professed love of Williams' music, you would think that Kessler would give us some insight into the man and what he's been up to during the last three decades. Instead, what you get here are numerous opportunities spent trying to get Williams to emote on camera with very little regard for what makes him tick as a person. There are some interesting and amusing clips of Williams' 70s variety and talk show appearances but, other than...

Crisp adventure
What a great print in excelent colors, the colors of the costumes playing with each other and the backgrounds and so forth. Great swashbuckling and Anthony Dexter and Anthony Quinn very convincing. A Little but: The middle section of the plot is a bit boring with too much court intrigue and too little action. Else highly recommendable. And nostalgia: I have the comic book version since childhood without seeing the actual Picture before now. Wow!

I seen this before.
The disc was in a lot better shape than I thought it would be. Picture quality was good. Story has been done before ie.

Airport Terminal Pack

Airport Terminal Pack - A Slice of History
The Airport Terminal Pack is the definitive collection of the Airport series of disaster films produced in the 1970s. The release comes in a beautifully made digi-pack case which looks absolutely fantastic. This is surrounded by an outer box, with the title of the set embossed - definitely a quality much higher than originally expected! Inside has a picture montage from all the films, and a one sheet insert with a blurb about each film.

Now, about the movies...

Airport was a commercial box office success when it was released in 1970, taking over $100 million at the US box office. Based on a novel by Arthur Hailey, the story is set at an international airport with the main plot being about a passenger who sets off a bomb in an airliner. There are a a few intricately woven sub-plots in the film, which keep the viewer entertained throughout. Wonderfully acted by the cast, which includes Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset, and Burt Lancaster. Helen Hayes won the best supporting actress...

Definite framing/mastering error on Aiport 1975
There is definitely a mastering error on Airport 1975; the picture is nowhere near as wide as it SHOULD be.

While it's a bit of an exaggeration to say tires and engines are oval, the image is definitely not mastered properly. I'd say the aspect ratio is either more like 2.2:1 when it should be 2.35:1, or Airport 1975 was actually 2.4:1 or so.

This error can easily be seen by comparing the new anamorphic pressing with the earlier GoodTimes DVD or the Universal LaserDisc release. People look very tall and thin as compared to how they should look (and yes, my DVD player is set for 4:3 Letterbox, not 16:9.)

Note the other three films in this collection are mastered correctly; only Airport 1975 shows this error (of course, the film I bought the collection for an anamorphic copy of.)

I hope Universal corrects this error as they did with the Back to the Future trilogy, and really you probably won't notice it if you aren't aware of it, but once you are the error is very, very obvious...

The law of diminishing returns
Let's cut to the cheese: Some of these movies are not good. The last one especially is a real turkey.

Still, I give this collection (Airport Terminal Pack, also confusingly titled "The Franchise Collection" on the boxed set) 3 stars because you get all four films for an MSRP of under twenty bucks (often on sale here for even less) and sometimes you just need a classic disaster flick. To be fair, you may not want to watch either of the last two sequels more than once.

The best by a long shot is the first effort. Airport was actually nominated for ten Oscars in 1970 (Helen Hayes was the only winner). Airport '75 (featuring the infamous mid-air pilot transfer) was the basis for many of the spoof jokes seen in Airplane!. The plot started getting ridiculous by Airport '77 (hijacked plane underwater in the Bermuda Triangle??), and a couple years later the script writers evidently decided to let it...

The Spanish Prisoner

"Beware of all enterprises which require new clothes."
The art of the confidence game, or con, for short...very few manage to bring it to the screen as well or a clever as David Mamet, and The Spanish Prisoner (1997) is, while not in my opinion his best, but better than most, and certainly is a good display of Mamet's writing and style for direction. Written and directed by Mamet (House of Games, Glengarry Glen Ross, Wag the Dog), the film stars Campbell Scott, Steve Martin, Ben Gazzara, and Rebecca Pidgeon (who's married to Mamet).

Scott plays Joseph Ross, an inventor who creates a top secret mathematical formula of sorts intended to allow for the manipulation of the stock market somehow, and has the potential to make a lot, a whole lot, of money for the company he works for...problem is Ross is beginning to have doubts about receiving his fair share, what he believes he's entitled to, from the company that plans to utilize the formula. As he tries to negotiate an equitable agreement with the company, he meets a well to do...

Ingeniously plotted thriller which moves at breakneck speed.
Written and directed by David Mamet, this clever thriller of industrial espionage is full of surprising twists and turns which keep the viewer on the edge of the seat. Joe Ross (Campbell Scott), a young man working under a special contract, has developed "the process" which will allow a company to control the global market. Only Ross and the company president, Mr. Klein (Ben Gazzara), have keys to the safe where the notes on the process are kept, and high security has been maintained, but Ross is edgy. Klein has not paid him a bonus and is dragging his feet about rewarding him appropriately.

Devious manipulators conspire to make Ross even more uncertain about Klein's loyalty, hoping they can steal the formula and sell it to European or Japanese competitors. Front and center in the plot is Jimmy Dell (smarmily played by Steve Martin), who masquerades as a very wealthy high flyer, appealing to Ross's desire to get what he deserves and fears he won't get from Mr. Klein...

Another Great Con-Game Movie From Mamet
First, there is Mamet's dialogue: punchy, pungent, at once surreal and downright earthy, a pidgin English that starts out sounding weird and contrived in the actor's mouths and ends sounding as honest as breathing. Remember, this guy is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright.

Then there's Mamet's plotting: we know there are going to be "bad" people--masters of the Big Con--conniving to steal Campbell Scott's lucrartive "process" (one of the best MacGuffin's since Hitchcock), but trying to determine who's in on it and who's an innocent (?) bystander is one of the ongoing delightful puzzles of the movie. Mamet slowly reveals the true colors of his characters like a master at stud poker. Eventually poor Campbell realizes he's been robbed, framed and screwed eight ways til Sunday (in a brilliant interrogation scene where most of the pieces come together), and as viewers, we feel as tightly trapped as he does.

Finally there are the perfomaces:...

Somewhere Between

Extraordinary girls, intense film
I took my 16 year old adopted daughter to see this film in the theatre, thinking it would help her think about her history and identity, and might start a conversation about some difficult topics she must be thinking about. While the movie inspired and moved me, my daughter simply thought it was 'sad' and assured me that she was not that concerned about exploring her identity as an adoptee. It is possible that what these girls did was just more than she could imagine herself ever doing.

The movie follows four real teenage girls who connect with each other through an on-line community for adoptees from China. The film weaves together several adventures the girls have, showing them meeting and traveling together, often with one of the girls narrating the experience. The two main trips I remember were one to Barcelona where one of the girls participates in a panel discussion on adoption and addresses the very raw topic of abandonment, and a trip to China where another...

Four bright engaging teenage girls talk about what it means to be born in China but raised in America
The documentary "Somewhere Between" was conceived as almost literally a labor of love. In 2008, the director, Lisa Goldstein Knowlton, and her husband had adopted a baby girl from China, and Knowlton wanted to have some idea of what her daughter would have to experience as she got older. As a veteran film producer (Whale Rider, The Shipping News, Crazy in Alabama) as well as director of documentaries (The World According to Sesame Street and others), it was natural for Knowlton to decide to document what she found out, and in the process be able to one day show her daughter everything she had learned.

In 1979, China, faced with forecasts of severe over-population, implemented a strict one-child policy in an attempt to limit its population growth. Since traditionally Chinese families favored boys over girls, many families wanted their one child to be a boy. The result was large numbers of infant girls being either given up for adoption or simply abandoned. Over the...

Speechless
I saw this movie last night. The emotions I felt left me speechless for hours. This is a must see film for any parent who has or is considering adoption - especially internationally. I am so proud of the girls who told their stories and honestly gave their perspectives on being adopted from a foreign country. They are articulate, smart, sensitive and very in touch with their feelings. I want my adopted daughter from China to see this film when she is older and asking the tough teenage questions these girls are facing about who they are. I found the reunion with the birth family thought provoking and tragic. My daughter's birth mother has been in my prayers since I made the decision to adopt from China. I was very touched by the birth father's emotions, as I had not really thought about his feelings before. I highly recommend this film. Please be certain that your child is mature enough to handle the tough questions of abandonment and birth family reunions. The content is...

This is a zany caper with some great performances- Cyd Charisse, George Sanders, and of course, Ernie Kovacs. Very clever- highly recommended.

Funny In Part...but often over done
What a waste to have such a fine performer such as Kovacs wasted on an uneven script. Premise for this movie often fails to deliver the laughs.

Good Old Bill Williams
Long on my wanted list, this Sony Choice Collection from Columbia does not let me down. An excellent wide screen B/W print means good value (but it is a bit expensive), and the plot about a Presidential ordered Cattle Drive from South to North moves at a frantic pace as directed by the reliable Fred F. Sears. The cast is a good "Western" one - Led by Williams, with Ray Teal, Don Harvey, Richard Jaeckel in good roles with a support cast of (unbilled) Clay Moore, George Keymas, Chris Alcaide, Lane Chandler, and.. Tex Ritter in a "blink and you will miss him" thankless role, and Ray Corrigan, and I am ashamed to say..I still don't know what part he played!!. My one slight quarrel is that you must forget/overlook the fact that most, tho not all, of the action scenes are stock footage from... Ah that's the question...Is it Jon Hall's "Kit Carson"? Still a great show and a great line up of a great band. Hence the 1 star.

While Casino Royale was a worthy and thrilling reboot to the franchise, Quantum of Solace fell flat with critics and fans. To make matters more interesting, MGM has had financial woes over the last number of years and needed a hit to reinvigorate the studio. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Skyfall.

Not only does the movie qualify as one of the most action-packed and entertaining movies of the year, it ranks on my list as one of the best Bond flicks to date. As has come to be expected, Craig is terrific as the British spy, portraying the character with charm and intensity. The action is top notch and the story is superbly written. Among my favorite moments were the blistering opening sequences, the introduction of the film's villain, and the intense final act, which finds Bond cornered yet unafraid. The real treat, however, is Bardem's role as the sinister...

So good I've seen it twice already!!
I am a die hard Sean-Connery-as-James-Bond fan. I like most of Roger's and a couple of Pierce's. I was not happy when I first learned of Daniel Craig as the new Bond. Daniel who? Was my first reaction. Not another Lazenby, I thought...
I like Casino Royale, but it took me a couple of watches on DVD for it to grow on me. I didn't hate Quantum of Solace as much as others seem to, but then I saw Skyfall..... I love this movie so much that not one day has gone by when I haven't thought of it at least once. I saw it twice in one week, and I never do that when movies are in theaters. The writers of this film must be brought back for the next one, yes it has some minor similarities to The Dark Knight movies, but so what. I can not wait for the Blu Ray release. I hate to admit it, but this may just be my new favorite Bond movie. The only thing that would make it perfect for me would be if Connery were still young enough to play Bond. The opening sequence, the action, Javier as the...

The best Bond film in many years
Although I remain a loyal fan to the Bond of my youth (Roger Moore), Daniel Craig is, in my opinion, one of the very best of the rest. In Skyfall he demonstrated how he has matured into the character - and the writing and execution of virtually every other aspect of this film are superior to his first two outings. Some viewers are finding this Bond outing a bit slow moving. I didn't, although it is admittedly more restrained than many other films from the series. Nevertheless, I found it engaging from beginning to end. I thought certain parts of the film packed an emotional punch seldom felt in other Bond films.

It is interesting how the public's expectations for Bond have changed. When View to A Kill premiered critics blasted the level of violence and even Roger Moore said he thought at least one scene in that movie went too far. The current take on Bond is far more violent and the bad guys are often presented in a much darker light than the villains of old - even if...

DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father's Dream

I Love It!!
This was good and insightful. As the saying goes it takes a village to raise a child, this documentary shows how much that is true and in how many different ways it's true. Team Jackson was awesome and committed and succeeded in reaching their ultimate goal.

Great football and inspirational video!
Just finished watching it and for me, since I play football, it was extremely inspirational. I recommend this to any young football player. Keep believing, have a great work ethic, and you'll get there!

Great documentary!
The documentary was awesome! The end was a bit of a tear jerker but overall it was superb. Very intimate documentary.

Ghost Trap

A Fun Family Film!
This was a fun movie for the whole family! Though I had never seen any of these actors in the past, my kids are always open for a fun film, especially when it comes to spooky places and things. The movie itself was enjoyable and the acting was pretty good for new actors. This reminds me some of the movies I have been watching with my girls on the Disney Channel, but really, overall, it was simply a fun family film that all will enjoy!

bad acting
Bad acting and a very boring plot. Did not keep the kids attention, or mine either. Trailer was better than movie.

* Spoiler alert. Great start but fizzles out quickly.
My family and I sat down to watch the new movie Ghost Trap from Inception Media Group. While the movie, for me, started out pretty good, it went downhill after that. The movie's idea is kind of cute as an intelligent pre-teen girl named Cynthia causes trouble by launching a rocket that causes havoc in what appeared to be the entire town. Cynthia's punishment for this act was to perform community service in the form of doing chores for a grumpy old woman who was hurt due to her rocket launch.

When she gets to the woman's house, however, she soon realizes that there is a bit more going on at that house than just grumpiness. Soon Cynthia enlists two friends and her uniquely odd science teacher to help her get to the bottom of what is going on. Armed with devices that will remind many of Ghost Busters, the gang tries to trap the ghosts of the old woman's house. At this point the movie gets pretty dark, which I found irritating, and it is even difficult to make out what is...

Fairfield Road

WONDERFULLY ROMANTIC
I saw this movie when it first came on Television and couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD and finally it has. Can't wait until it arrives in February

Lightweight, Predictable Hallmark, Cape Cod, Romantic Comedy
This made for TV, pretty much G-rated, Dove approved(12+), search for one's direction in life while finding romance Hallmark/Gaiam released flick provides enough charm and scenery to escape away for 90 minutes.

Jesse Metcalfe(I like "On the Other Line" better for laughs and romance) plays Noah, an up and coming Boston political strategist, whose life suddenly crashes both career-wise and relationship-wise. He ends up chasing a diamond ring up to scenic Cape Cod, off season, at the pretty little town of Harpswell. It's simple bucolic existence threatened by development.

He discovers love (or is he just on the rebound?) and begins to question his life's goals. Will he stay here in Harpswell or bail out to the big city and big dreams? Stay tuned.

It's all very much done before. The actors are fine and likable, mostly. The story is tepid, the romance gentle. Hallmark clean- they do imply infidelity; however, the kiddoes will be bored silly...

Politics and Friendships
A very efficient campaign manager finds himself without a position, a fiancee, and a lack of direction. New friends, a new direction, and a new position are the fresh start in his life.

Roger Moore Collection 007 James Bond Ultimate Edition, Volume 2

Bond Is Back!
I'll leave the reviews of the films themselves to other people, as I am a HUGE Bond fan so I love them all, but I will tell you what's on the discs. The set features 'Moonraker,' 'For Your Eyes Only,' and 'Octopussy,' and it's disc one only of the two-disc Ultimate Edition sets that came out in 2008. Unfortunately, the second discs were the ones with all the bonus features like theatrical trailers, radio spots, and documentaries, but disc one does contain audio commentaries. 'Moonraker' has 2 commentaries, one with Sir Roger Moore, and one with director Lewis Gilbert and members of the cast and crew. 'For Your Eyes Only' has 3, one with Moore, one with director John Glen and members of the cast, and one with Michael G. Wilson and crew members. And 'Octopussy' has 2, one with Moore, and one with director John Glen. The picture and sound for all three movies are fantastic. If the bells and whistles aren't that important to you, this is a great way to pick up three of Sir Roger's best.

O.K.
Great for James Bond fans. I want the complete James Bond collection this seemed like a good way to get. In the Roger Moore collection one movie was left out. No good.

decent value
Three movies in this package:
Moonraker- For Your Eyes Only- Octopussy
The display aspect ratio is quite wide screen, which I don't care for much but the movies themselves are standard Bond fare with Roger Moore.
Personally, Moonraker was not all that good but with most Bond movies, even an average movie has interesting parts.
The color and picture quality is good on these DVDs.

Alpha Males Experiment

Well done and thoughtful indie movie
Well done and thoughtful indie movie. Both my girlfriend and I enjoyed the film and all the discussion it provoked.

Amazingly honest movie that is well worth watching
I just got to see this movie last night after pre-ordering it and absolutely love it.

It's very much not a typical romantic comedy which is probably why I like it so much. It states some things bluntly that most people will not want to admit are true, yet we all know they are.

All the cast did a great job; Ross McCall and Paul Alessi were very convincing as brothers with the outwardly macho attitude with each other, but there's the little things they each do that shows their brotherly love.

I also loved Danielle Nicolet and Omar Gooding. Their portrayal of a married couple going through a rocky bit was so well done that I was actually talking to the screen hoping they'd hear me and stop fighting.

Paul did an amazing job as the older brother coaching his younger brother on how to 'properly date women'. His character, Kyle, was definitely the stand out and my favorite; with Amie Barsky's character of Patricia a close second because of her...

Alpha Males Experiment - A relationship roller coaster ride
Alpha Males Experiement (aka Knuckle Draggers) is the perfect film to watch with a group of people. The ensemble cast presents a range of characters where a connection can be made with one or more of the situations presented. The story is a relationship roller coaster ride with funny highs and dramatic lows.

The opening credits begin with a series of neat caveman drawings with music that set the tone of the story. You'll feel like a voyeur peeking into each character's scenario. Starting with Kyle (Paul J Alessi) who is able to take control of a bar scene injustice that many guys wish they could do in real life. Next is the view of Kyle's brother, Ethan (Ross McCall), who has problems with his fiancé and ends up being dumped. As Ethan struggles to find out what he can do to get back together with his ex-fiancé, his brother Kyle solicits advice to help him get over her and move forward with a chance at a better relationship with someone new. Things don't work...

The Resistance

Ninjas + Japanese Soldiers + an evil General + a beautiful girl with vengeance + Nazis = Perfect Movie
The Resistance The Resistance

This movie is a perfect combination of martial arts and WW2 movies, it has more than I expected.

The plot is about the Japanese occupation of China 1940. The city of Sichen is in control of a Japanese General Takeshi (Li Zhang). The Japanese army is brutally murdering the Chinese people and the atrocities committed against the Chinese women are especially barbaric, until one day a Black Dress Killer arrive to the town, and kill over 1,500 soldiers and is systematically working his way to the Japanese General. The Black Dress Killer is a woman named Xiaoyun (Serena Hu or Hu Sang) who lost her family during General Takeshis occupation of her village and now she seek vengeance against the General. Meanwhile a Resistance leader Chen (Zhao Jun Long) failed to save a friend from Japanese prison but...

Resist Watching.
I watched this on stream and was so moved I felt I had to warn others. The synopsis given on IMDB was clearly what the film makers intended us to see, but the actual result is quite something else. This is supposed to be in the aftermath of the `Rape of Nanking' see `City of Life and Death' for an excellent portrayal of that part of shameful history. This is about `one man' who stands up to fight the entire Imperial Japanese Army and of an American journalist who wants to bring the world the truth. The thing is this is set in some village (well its only got one street by the looks of things) called The City of Sichen in 1940 some three years after Nanking.

A mystery resistance fighter called `The Black Dress Killer' presumably because `he' wears black and kills people. Well he is going around beheading the Japanese in a CGI blood splatter fest. Meanwhile the card board cut out nasty General decides he will kill absolutely everybody unless he is told who this killer is. This...

Good Movie showcasing a Great Shaolin Kung Fu Master
Zhang Li Peng is a Genuine Shaolin Kung Fu Master with Extrodinary Skills. This Movie showcases his emerging talents as an actor. I only wished that more of his Kung Fu talents were exhibited in this movie. Its well worth purchasing for the entertainment value as well as the collectors value. Li Peng will be a big star in the near future and you can own what will become his earlier work. Also see Man from Shaolin.
